About this service
Lawn aeration is one of the most beneficial things you can do for a compacted or thinning lawn and one of the most overlooked. Over time, soil compacts under foot traffic, mowing, and normal settling. Compacted soil reduces the movement of water, air, and nutrients down to the root zone, and roots struggle to penetrate and spread. The result is a lawn that looks thin and stressed even when it is being mowed and fertilized regularly. Core aeration physically removes small plugs of soil from the lawn, creating channels that allow air, water, and fertilizer to reach the root zone directly. The plugs break down on the surface within a few weeks, returning organic matter to the soil. Overseeding at the time of aeration takes advantage of the openings in the soil to get good seed-to-soil contact. New seed sown directly onto established turf without aeration has poor contact with the soil and low germination rates. Done together in the right window, aeration and overseeding is the most effective way to thicken a thin lawn without the cost and disruption of full sod installation.
