Pavers vs poured concrete: which is right for you?
It is one of the most common questions we get from homeowners planning a backyard patio. Here is an honest breakdown of both options so you can make the right call for your property.

If you are planning a backyard patio and trying to decide between concrete pavers and poured concrete, you are not alone. It is one of the most common questions we get during consultations, and the honest answer is that both are good options depending on what you are looking for. Here is how to think about it.
Poured concrete is cheaper upfront. A poured concrete patio typically costs less per square foot than a paver installation, primarily because the material cost is lower and the installation is faster. If budget is the primary driver, poured concrete gets you more square footage for the same money.
The tradeoff is long-term performance. Poured concrete is a monolithic slab, which means it is highly susceptible to cracking as the ground beneath it settles and shifts with freeze-thaw cycles. In climates with significant winters, concrete slabs almost always crack over time. Once a concrete slab cracks, your repair options are limited. You can fill the crack with filler, which is visible and temporary, or you can replace the entire slab, which is expensive and disruptive. There is no middle ground.
Pavers handle ground movement much better because they are an interlocking flexible system. When the ground beneath shifts, individual pavers move with it rather than cracking. If a paver does crack or become damaged, you replace the individual unit, not the entire patio. That repairability is a significant long-term advantage.
Pavers also offer much more design flexibility. The range of shapes, colors, sizes, and patterns available in concrete pavers and natural stone allows for a finished product that looks and feels more custom than a standard concrete slab. If the aesthetic of your outdoor space matters to you, pavers give you more to work with.
Maintenance is roughly comparable. Poured concrete needs to be sealed periodically and cracks need to be addressed as they appear. Paver joints need to be replenished with polymeric sand every few years as it erodes, and individual pavers may need to be releveled if significant ground movement occurs.
The bottom line: if you want the most durable, repairable, and visually flexible option and you are willing to invest more upfront, pavers are the better long-term choice. If budget is the primary constraint and you are not planning to stay in the home long-term, poured concrete gets the job done at a lower initial cost.
